Ricardo Despradel-Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in New York and Massachusetts

I’m a bilingual Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), licensed in both New York and Massachusetts, specializing in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), eating disorders, substance use disorders, and trauma-related conditions such as PTSD. I work with adults, and with teenagers only when treating OCD, using structured, evidence-based interventions that support meaningful and sustainable change.

My approach is grounded in gold-standard treatments, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) for eating disorders, Motivational Interviewing for substance use, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy for trauma. I provide care through a trauma-informed, culturally responsive lens that honors each client’s lived experience, identity, and values.

In my work with OCD, I frequently help individuals manage distressing intrusive thoughts related to harm, contamination, sexuality, or morality—along with compulsions like excessive checking, avoidance, reassurance-seeking, or mental reviewing. For clients struggling with eating disorders, I treat issues such as restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, body image distress, compulsive exercise, and the intense fear of weight gain that can persist even in the face of serious medical risks. When addressing substance use, I support clients dealing with cravings, withdrawal symptoms, increasing tolerance, emotional dependence on substances, and repeated attempts to stop despite negative consequences. For those experiencing PTSD, I help process and reduce symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, and avoidance of trauma reminders.

As a gay Latino therapist, I am deeply committed to serving the LGBTQIA+ community. I bring both lived experience and professional training to this work, offering an affirming and nonjudgmental space for clients navigating identity-related stress, internalized shame, and the mental health impacts of discrimination or marginalization. I believe therapy should be a space where you don’t have to explain who you are to be understood.

I offer therapy in both English and Spanish, and sessions are available via secure telehealth across New York and Massachusetts. Whether you're navigating complex co-occurring disorders or seeking relief from years of emotional pain, my goal is to provide structured, compassionate care that empowers you to move toward greater stability, self-understanding, and long-term recovery.
